Bristol based raw vocalist Dali de Saint Paul has been experimenting since 2012. Her approach blurs sonic lines between voice and instrument and destabilises spatial and linguistic borders.
“She picks up any music genre on the fly, catches words like a cat does a cotton swab, she throws words, throws notes into the fire of her anger or her joy and it crackles and it ignites; sometimes she'll start singing a fragile melody that makes you weep.”
— Fanny Chiarello in Basta Now (Permanent Draft, 2024)
With her self-exploding project EP/64 (the Ephemeral Project 64), which involved more than 40 artists over 6 years, Dali refreshed conceptions of improvisation, bringing back the importance of community in music culture. She’s a prolific collaborator, other projects including 16mm avant folk feminine ensemble Viridian, dub modular trio dark idl, super improv group Ondata Rossa, post-industrial duo Harrga, and experimental film, light and sound performance Penumbra. She’s also a member of the Avon Terror Corps crew and has appeared on many international compilations and releases. Her projects have gained audience and attention from national and international press, such as The Wire,The Quietus, BBC radio 3 or The New Noise, and in September 2024 she received an Oram Award.
Dali is now available for international and UK bookings to present a solo performance putting vocal improvisation at the centre.
