Copper Sounds are an artist duo who use traditional and contemporary processes to explore the physical and visual nature of sound. They see sound as a malleable material, and manipulate it through designing, making and performing with unique sonic objects.
Their process is about experimentation and the unknown - trying things out, failing, learning and always thinking directly about how the object and the sound affect one another. The objects they make tell the story of their process and act as markers of their journey through sound. Due to the diverse nature of their practice, the presentation of their work takes many different forms. They started out as an experimental record manufacturer; making records out of materials such as copper, volcanic rock, chalk and ceramic. During extended live DJ sets they mix these different materials together to sculpt a dark, fractious and industrial dance floor energy. Recent work however focuses on minimalist-inspired compositions, exploring the different acoustic and resonant properties of particular shapes, forms and materials. As well as making large scale ceramics, they have begun incorporating 3D design, 3D print and bronze casting into their work.
In 2018 they toured the UK with the Outlands Network and have performed at high profile venues such as South London Gallery, Bexhill Pavilion, Arnolfini, MK Gallery & the Royal Academy in London.
They have been reviewed by International Orange, Freq Magazine, The Quietus and 24/7 and their music has been released on labels including Brunswick Club Editions, Fractal Meat Cuts, Avon Terror Corps and Slack Alice.
They have hosted a regular show on Noods Radio and received radio plays across leading online radio stations such as NTS, and in February 2022 on the BBC3 Late Junction feature ‘Rock Music,’ a show based on sound/music made or inspired by rocks, stones and pebbles.
Residencies include Strange Brew Bristol 2021, Shell Cottage New Haven 2017, NES Residency and Exhibition, Iceland 2016.
